Elouise Cobell: What one woman can do when passion is behind the task
It is a great tragedy for all of Native Country when a person who has inspired, been a role model and fought for all of our rights passes. Elouise Cobell of the Blackfeet Nation was such a person.

I have known Elouise professionally for more than 12 years through various Native American conferences and my work with the Native American Rights Fund.

Elouise began a 15-year lawsuit in 1996 against the U.S. government for mismanaged land royalties, which resulted in a settlement of $3.4 billion.

Anyone who takes up an issue like this and bulldogs it through is an inspiration. The road was long and hard, but she never gave up. Her battle will impact Native Country for generations to come.

Our personal and national hearts are heavy with sorrow with the passing of Elouise Cobell. But, when we become disheartened by our own battles, we will be inspired by remembering how Elouise proceeded undaunted through so many trials. She showed the nation what one woman can do when passion is behind the task. Our ancestors had the same passion and undaunting will to not give up, which Elouise carried on through her work.

Our condolences go out to the Cobell family and our prayers are with them.
