South Dakota fan shares his Alaskan adventure with Tanka

I live in Kyle, SD, where my fiancee is a middle school science teacher. I grew up in South Dakota and heard of Tanka Bar while living out of state. When I returned to SD to live in Kyle, I was pleasantly surprised to see Tanka Bar's corporate office right on the edge of town.

While my fiancee is teaching school, I work from home on my PhD in Botany through Oregon State University. I study lichens in general but my dissertation is focused on caribou, where they go in relation to lichen (their main winter food) and whether climate change will affect the amount of lichen in the future.

As I was getting ready for this year's fieldwork in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, AK, I thought I should approach Tanka to see if they'd like to "sponsor" my research by giving me a pro-deal on their products. Having done a lot of backcountry research in Alaska, I had grown tired of the typical sausages that have lots of nitrates and other preservatives. Tanka Bar kindly gave me a 15% discount. With that discount, I bought two boxes of 1 lb buffalo sausages. This was a great lunch meat for the three-person crew for much of the summer.

Tanka Wild Gourmet Summer Sausage.

All the photos were taken in Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve, AK.
