Sundogs in the frigid air over South Dakota this morning
1ST PHOTO: Shawn Brave Heart, a sales and customer care specialist at Tanka Bar, took this wide shot of a sundog out the back door of his home in Kyle, SD, at 7:55 this morning.

2ND PHOTO: Eric Pourier, a social networking specialist intern at Tanka Bar, took this photo of a sundog outside his house near Kyle, SD, about 8:30 this morning. The temperature on the Pine Ridge Reservation, where Eric lives and where the Tanka headquarters are located, was around 7 degrees at the time the photo was taken, Eric said.

Really, really nice shots, Shawn and Eric.

ABOUT SUNDOGS

A sundog, also known as a parhelion, meaning "beside the sun," is also called a mock sun.

According to Wikipedia, this phenomenon creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun.
