Tanka CEO shares the challenges and rewards running a Native business

Tom Katus, vice president of Dacotah Territory International Visitor Program, brought a tour group for a quick presentation on economic development and businesses in our community on the Pine Ridge Reservation, SD. DTIVP is a non-profit, all volunteer organization founded in 1995. They promote global understanding through professional, cultural and educational person-to-person exchanges with international visitors and local citizens.

David White Bull, loan portfolio manager, presented on behalf of Lakota Funds. He talked about economic development, the fiscal training they provide, the support for businesses in the area and the housing development program they run. Whitney O'Rourke, credit union branch manager/loan officer, touched base on the future goals of the company by establishing a credit union through Lakota Funds.

The next presenter was our CEO, Karlene Hunter. She informed the group on our economic history and the improvements that happened here on the Pine Ridge Reservation. She also talked about the Tanka Bar and the business' accomplishments and challenges producing a traditional Native food.

The last presenter was Scott Moore, project manager for Thunder Valley CDC and Berkebile Nelson Immenschuh McDowell. Scott talked about the importance of youth and their involvement with spirituality and bringing back the culture and traditions. He also discussed how they are using this to create a sustainable green community and developing a place for the youth and young families.
