Tanka Fit walking club taking steps to better health and wellness
In keeping with the Tanka Bar mission, our staff is making strides to better health with a new TankaFit walking club. Like most Americans, many of our team are faced with their own health challenges and are working on improving wellness.

The idea for the walking club stemmed from an exercise at one of the company's staff meetings. They were all given an imaginary $10,000 to use toward improving their health and our leadership team asked them what they would do with it. One of the ideas was a walking club with rewards for each milestone.

"At the end of the meeting, Karlene [Hunter, Tanka's CEO] decided to just start it anyway," Tonya Hunter, production manager, said. "We are trying to do 100 miles in 10 weeks. And maybe we will have an incentive -- like a Tanka Fit sweatshirt -- for each person that walks 100 miles."

Ms. Hunter said the club is not about competition, but is meant to serve as motivation to be active. The team's goal is walk two miles a day for five days a week. The group usually walks after work to a half-mile dirt track near headquarters, then walks the track twice. It is a half mile from headquarters to the track. They also walk on the weekends. So far, about 15 Tanka staff members have participated in the walks.

"We started out a little rocky because of illness and the weather," she said. "We'll have another week to get caught up."

To help keep everyone on track, Ms. Hunter stops by each staff member's desk to motivate them to walk, but she has encountered at least one reluctant walker. She just lets him know what he will miss out on if he doesn't reach goal.

"I just tell him, 'You are going to be sad when we all have our hooded sweaters,'" she said with a laugh.
