Tanka Spotlight: dans-plan.com

Since our launch in October 2007 we have been privileged to work with outstanding retail partners. These folks are so passionate about their businesses and their customers we decided we needed to share their unique stories. If you'd like to be featured, or if you'd like to nominate a Tanka retailer for a story, please contact Jenice Johnson at jenicejohnson@tankabar.com.

Not all of our wonderful retailers have storefronts. Many of them do business online and have a community following via the Internet. Dan's Plan, which started in 2009, is a program that focuses on achieving your ideal weight and healthy living. Founder Dan Pardi said he had been thinking about the concept of the system for years prior to officially starting the company.

"In graduate school, I studied how our brains regulate how fat is stored on the body. I then helped a bunch of friends lose weight, but one friend in particular lost several hundred pounds," he said. "When I shared his story, I was truly amazed at how many people would ask me questions about how they could get to their best weight. It felt like 90 percent of the people I told would follow up with me. I finally decided to dedicate 100 percent of my time to building out the program."

The site also has a shopping feature that incorporates products the company approves of which includes Tanka Bars. Mr. Pardi said Tanka Bars fit in perfectly with the site's meal options and are some of their most popular products.

"I think they [Tanka Bars] are so popular for two reasons. They taste great and they are really unique. If you think about the protein bar market, there isn't anything like the Tanka Bar, so it provides a great, new option for people," he said. "What I've noticed is that almost anyone who orders one box orders again. Personally, I always have one with me in my bag."

About Dan and working "The Plan"

Dan Pardi graduated with a Master of Science degree in exercise physiology from Florida State University where he studied energy homeostasis. He is currently a Ph.D candidate in the Department of Neurology at Leiden University in the Netherlands and does his research through Stanford University on sleep loss, decision making, and eating behaviors. Even with his background, and a team of professionals, the company's "manifesto" states, "We don't know it all. We know we don't know it all. Dan is not a guru."

The company's approach to weight control encompasses knowledge of ancestry, modern science and behavior. For more information, read the Dan's Plan company history and the plan overview.

"We don't think a healthy lifestyle needs to be clinical," Mr. Pardi said. "One of the main reasons we wanted to build a website is so that our members would have an engaging, interactive website to play with."

One of the biggest hurdles in his business is keeping up with science.

"That is one of the hardest parts with a small company but we do our best. We really take it seriously," he said. "For example, this June I'll be attending the major U.S. sleep neuroscience conference titled APSS - The Associated Professional Sleep Society Meetings. There will be a lot of presentations looking at sleep and weight control. It's a great way to hear about what's going on and talk to the people that are doing different research projects. We try to make it a habit to return from a meeting and ask the questions."

A diverse community

Dan's Plan pulls a varied consumer base. Mr. Pardi said there are people who were interested in losing a lot of weight and those who weren't interested in losing any weight at all.

"We worked with people who have really stressful jobs as a high-powered lawyer and others who travel the world as a photographer. We worked with people who were really into nutrition and those who didn't care that much about food," he said. "Many of the people who use our site are actually people who are looking to sustain their current weight. We always ask our members, 'Are you living the lifestyle today that is going to help you be healthy now and 20 years from now?'"
