Tanka Spotlight: The Main Street Market, Rapid City, SD
Since our launch in October 2007, we have been privileged to work with outstanding retail partners. These folks are so passionate about their businesses and their customers, we decided we needed to share their unique stories. Our Tanka Spotlight series runs every other Thursday. If you'd like to be featured or if you'd like to nominate a Tanka retailer for a story, please contact Jason Stover, jasonstover@tankabar.com.

RETAILER: The Main Street Market

OWNER: Nina Hollenbeck

LOCATION: 512 Main St., Rapid City, SD

Tanka Bar: How did your business get started?

Nina: In May of 1996, a friend from Spearfish, SD, and I started this business.

TB: How did you come to find out about the Tanka Bar?

Nina: I found out about them at a local pow wow, when they were first unveiled. Also, someone was taking samples around to area businesses. I just thought that these would go perfect in our store.

TB: How do the Tanka Bars sell for you?

Nina: The Tanka Bars sell very steady here. They do better in the summer. It has to do with the colors of the package. It is almost like a local color. It is also like a small, inexpensive souvenir they can take home with them. During the non-tourist season, the locals buy the Tanka Bar, because it has no chemicals, no artificial color or additives, and it is healthy.

TB: What do you think of the Tanka Bar?

Nina: I like the fact that they are good and chewy. They don't tear your teeth out when you're eating it. Any one can eat them. It is also a plus that we are a local business and I like that we support our local businesses.

TB: What do you think we could do to improve the Tanka Bar?

Nina: I can't see any way to improve it, except in the price. In the health food business, it is average priced compared to other health bars.

TB: What type of Tanka Bar do you prefer, the hot and spicy or the original?

Nina: I prefer the Tanka Bar original and I notice they sell better in my store. My typical customers are females in the age range of 35 to 65. Most of them prefer the original, also.

TB: Tell us a little more about your store.

Nina: We are locally owned and managed. We have a branch store in Pierre, SD. We sell health foods and supplements, and we carry a wide verity of food bars.
